Here's how you're messing up your soup!

Hi Reader,

As the year moves into late February and the doldrums of Winter are setting in, there's nothing better than warming you and your family up with a nice, warm, filling soup! Soup can feel like such an easy recipe to make since you just toss everything into a pot and let it simmer, but there's some techniques you can employ to improve the taste and texture of your soup and make sure every slurp is extra delicious.

  • Texture is important: Make sure you're slicing your ingredients into uniform sizes to ensure even cooking - larger pieces will take longer to cook and by the time they're finished some of the smaller pieces may be underdone. Also, some ingredients take longer to cook than others, so make sure you're adding the ones that take longer first so that the others don't turn to mush by the time it's done.
  • Season gradually, and adjust as it cooks: Remember, you can always add more seasoning, but you can't take it out, and as the soup simmers and loses volume, the flavors will grow more intense. Start out with salt and pepper and half the spices, then taste regularly and adjust as needed.
  • Start with a higher-quality broth: While store-bought chicken broth will work, if you truly want to unlock a deeper flavor profile then making your own or buying a higher-quality broth (like Better than Bouillon) will truly up your soup game.

Now that you're a soup expert (or if you're just looking to try out one of these techniques,) check out Dinner, then Dessert's soups page or check out one of the read-favorite soups below! Let's see what magic we can make happen in your pot!
